WTFAQ (Wow! Tons of Frequently Asked Questions)

While I strive to make it as easy as possible to get GiftttDy up and running (and keep it that way), the number of moving parts makes it challenging at times. To help you out, I’ve created a Frequently Asked Questions list for you. (Okay, so there aren’t tons of FAQs, but then again, there aren’t tons of problems.)

If your question isn’t answered here, I guess it’s not frequent. 🙂 Don’t worry, though I’m still happy to help. You can reach me through my contact form or on Twitter (@GiftttDy), assuming this Twitter thing isn’t just a fad…

General

Do I Need a Mac to Use GiftttDy?

Yes. GiftttDy does its magic on the Mac. Using IFTTT, I get the flexibility to add all sorts of services without having to change the GiftttDy code. To do the same on iOS would require a completely different approach – one that is beyond my development skills at this time.

Can I create my own IFTTT recipes for GiftttDy?

I don’t know. Can you? I think you can. In fact, I have every confidence in your ability to do so… as long as I tell you how. Amazingly, I do! Check out the recipe creation page. (Please note that as of 2/20/2015, this page is a bit out of date. It does not include instructions for creating daily mode recipes. I hope to have that updated shortly.)

What IFTTT recipes can I use with GiftttDy?

I’ve created a large number of recipes supporting a bunch of online services. I’ve created a page listing them, although as of now (Feb 20, 2015), it’s not fully up to date. You can start there, but be sure to check for the complete list by searching the IFTTT site for #giftttdy. Here’s a link that takes you to the IFTTT search results.

How do I fix the “Could not load rules… error?” (Hazel Rule File Corrupt)

When trying to install the Hazel rules, you get a message, “Could not load rules: The rules are either corrupt or not a valid rules file.”

The first thing to try is downloading the latest GiftttDy zip file. I’ve recreated the rules files and packaged everything in a disk image. This should be more reliable.

If that doesn’t work, you can create the rules manually as follows:

  • Open System Preferences.
  • Click the Hazel icon.
  • Click the Folders tab at the top of the window. The window is divided into two sections: Folders on the left and Rules on the right. As you select a folder under Folders, you’ll see the rules assigned to that folder under Rules.

For the giftttdy folder (this is the one where IFTTT places files):

  • Select the giftttdy folder on the left side of the window.
  • Click the + at the bottom of the Rules section.
  • In the window that appears, enter a name for the rule.
  • Leave “all” as the selected option where it says “If all of the following conditions are met.”
  • On the next line, select “Any File” from the dropdown.
  • Under the section “Do the following to the matched file or folder:” choose “Run AppleScript” then click the dropdown next to that and choose “Other…”
  • In the file window that opens, navigate to Applications, select GiftttDy, then click Open.
  • Click the plus sign at the end of the line you just completed.
  • In the new line that appeared, select “Move” from the dropdown.
  • In the dropdown labeled “to folder:” select “Trash.”
  • Click OK.

Here’s what the giftttdy rule should look like:

For the GiftttDy Temp folder:

  • Select the GiftttDy Temp folder.
  • Click the + at the bottom of the Rules section.
  • Enter a name for the rule.
  • Leave “all” as the selected option where it says “If all of the following conditions are met.”
  • On the next line, select “Date Created” then, next to that, choose “is not in the last.”
  • Select a duration for keeping the files. I use 1 month, but you can choose what you prefer. The files created here are very small and it’s helpful to keep them around awhile for troubleshooting.
  • Under the section “Do the following to the matched file or folder:” choose “Move” then click the dropdown next to that and choose “Trash.”
  • Click OK.

The GiftttDy Configurator doesn’t work. How can I install GiftttDy?

If the Configurator won’t run or hangs while running, there are two alternative options for installing. Please read the details here.
